Medical certificate rules for work in Australia

What a medical certificate says, whether it can be backdated, and the evidence your workplace can ask for under the Fair Work Act, in plain English.

An online medical certificate is an ordinary medical certificate. You speak with a qualified Australian doctor by phone, describe how you are feeling, and the doctor decides what to write. It carries the same weight as one written in a clinic. It is issued only where the doctor considers it clinically appropriate.

What is an online medical certificate?

It is a document from a doctor stating you were unfit for work, study or carer’s duties for a set period. You get one after a live phone consultation. The document is the same kind a doctor writes at a clinic desk. Workplaces and educators read it the same way.

The difference is where you are sitting. You stay home, which helps when you feel unwell.

At Clinoraa, a certificate consultation covers a short absence of one to two days, where it is clinically appropriate.

What does a medical certificate actually say?

Most certificates carry your name, the date of the consultation, and the dates you are considered unfit for work or study. They also carry the doctor’s name and provider details. A certificate does not have to name your diagnosis. A doctor can state that you have a medical condition without spelling out what it is.

This surprises a lot of people. If you would rather your employer did not read a specific condition, say so during the consult.

You can ask the doctor to keep the wording general. They will tell you if that is possible in your case.

Can a medical certificate be backdated?

No. A doctor can only certify what they have assessed. If you were unwell on Monday and speak with a doctor on Wednesday, the certificate normally runs from the day of the consult. A doctor may note the history you describe. That is not the same as certifying those earlier days.

So if you have already missed time, say so early in the consult. Honest detail helps the doctor write something accurate.

What does your workplace actually need?

Under the Fair Work Act, an employer can ask for evidence that would satisfy a reasonable person. A medical certificate is the usual form. A statutory declaration is another option many workplaces accept. Your own policy may ask for more than the law does, so read it before you book.

Reading it first saves an awkward conversation later.

A few things people often miss:

  • Carer’s leave evidence is different. It usually needs to show you were caring for a member of your immediate family or household who was unwell.
  • Study and placement rules vary. Some courses set their own wording or timing requirements.
  • Keep the original file. Forward the document you were sent rather than a photo of a screen.

How do you get one through Clinoraa?

Book a certificate consultation and choose a time. You speak with a qualified Australian doctor by phone about how you are feeling. Where it is clinically appropriate, the doctor issues a short certificate and sends it to you digitally, ready to forward.

The doctor may decide a certificate is not the right outcome, or that you need a longer consultation. That call is theirs to make after speaking with you.

Everyone’s health is different, and results vary from person to person.

When is a phone consult not enough?

If your symptoms are severe, unusual, or getting worse, a doctor may ask you to be seen in person. Anything needing an examination, a swab or hands-on testing is better handled face to face. If it is an emergency, call 000.

A longer illness may also need a different approach. Certificates for extended absence usually follow a fuller assessment, not a short consult.

How do you prepare for the consult?

A little preparation makes the conversation easier:

  • know your main symptoms and the day they started
  • have the dates you need covered
  • note any medication you take
  • have your workplace or course requirements handy
  • find a quiet spot where you can speak freely

Feeling unwell and need a certificate?

Speak with a qualified Australian doctor by phone about a medical certificate, without leaving home. Book a consult and talk it through.

Your history stays in one place for next time.
